THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE
Dir. Amy Holden Jones
Horror, USA, 1982, English, 77 min.
Directed by women and written as a commentary on the inherent sexism of slasher films by feminist icon Rita Mae Brown — but filmed completely straight — SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE became terrific inside joke. A group of high school girls decide to throw a slumber party that turns into a night of terror as an escaped lunatic decides to party crash. Although written with a feminist slant, the film doesn’t exactly steer away from the slasher cliches. In fact, it plays it completely straight and embraces them. That’s where the humor comes from. Especially with the most on the nose phallus of all time used by a psychotic killer: an industrial power drill. With its stylized photography, plot points involving pizza and an endlessly cool homemade synth score, SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE is a drop-dead masterpiece of subversive trash-horror.

CRAZY WORLD
Dir. Nabwana I.G.G.
Action, Uganda, 2019, Swahili, English, 82 min.
Welcome to Wakaliwood, Uganda: home of “DA BEST OF DA BEST MOVIES!” and the vanguards of DIY commando cinema. Under the guidance of writer/producer/director Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey (IGG) and with producer/star Alan Ssali Hofmanis, this crack crew of self-taught filmmakers and martial arts aficionados produce dozens of gonzo action films in the Kampala ghetto with budgets that rarely exceed $200 USD. Utilizing scrap parts to build computers, machine guns and a full-sized Huey helicopter, these real-life superheroes inspire more heart, imagination and soul than a thousand Hollywood blockbusters. In the latest Wakaliwood’s film CRAZY WORLD, a gang of child-snatching mobsters make a fatal mistake when they kidnap the Waka Stars, a team of pint-sized kung-fu masters who soon turn their cunning wits and deadly skills upon their captors.

THE STRANGE CASE OF DOCTOR JEKYLL & MISS OSBOURNE
Dir. Walerian Borowczyk
Horror, Sci-Fi, France, Germany, 1981, French, English, 91 min.
It’s the engagement party for brilliant young Dr Henry Jekyll and his fiancée, the beautiful Fanny Osbourne, attended by various pillars of Victorian society, including the astonishing Patrick Magee in one of his final roles. But when people are found raped and murdered outside and ultimately inside the house, it becomes clear that a madman has broken in to disrupt the festivities – but who is he? And why does Dr Jekyll keep sneaking off to his laboratory? Walerian Borowczyk’s visually stunning adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s much-filmed tale is crammed with wildly imaginative and outrageously perverse touches characteristic of the man who scandalised audiences with IMMORAL TALES and THE BEAST, not least the explicitly sexualised nature of Mr Hyde’s primal urges.
